I won 2 contests today!!!

I won two contests today. It's not everyday that I win something, so I'm really excited...

me as a California Raisin

I was a winner in both contests for my costumes..first up, at my work contest I was a California Raisin! My friend Donna helped me construct it...everything but the sunglasses pretty much. She's fab like that! I made it come to life, though (oh and added the gloves and tights and hot pinky purple Reebok kicks). I danced to the song "I heard it through the grapevine" and Flo Rida's "Low" (the Apple Bottom jeans song). I shook my booty, did the Roger Rabbit the best I could and the Brady Bunch thumb dance. I couldn't really roll my arms. My arms would reach together. Ha ha. I think it turned out funny and cute! I ended up splitting my winnings with her. That was our deal. I was really happy with how it turned out and everyone got a big kick outta it!

Next up, I won the costume contest on Amy at her Living Locurto Halloween blog party. I won for my canvas masterpiece canvas. She's mailing me out a prize (Not sure yet what it is, but I'm super excited). Go over there and check out her other cool entries. I'm fond of the stick figure man myself! Oh, and she featured my friend Chris Garris's awesome photo of me jumping. I'm thinking about making it my new fall/Thanksgiving banner, so stay tuned! On a very random note, everytime I have been typing jumping, I've been typing jumpking! Ugh!

It makes me really sad that the Halloween season is over, but I'm going to still try to stay in spirit and focus on some cool Thanksgiving crafts and Christmas crafts. I stayed so busy this year with Terrorific Tuesdays and my friend's wedding festivities that I didn't get to properly put out all my décor or have at least a Halloween pumpkin painting/carving party. There's always next year!

Hope you Swellions have a super swell weekend!

Cool new Texture paints

It's late and I'm tired. Now that Halloween is just about over, I'm kinda sad, cause I can write till I'm blue in the face about it, but when it comes to other content, I struggle.

So, this is going to be a super simple post...my work has a new Texture paint line and they are super cool. Our staff just made some really quick and simple videos that explain each of the products. Seeing is believing with this paint. They go on so smooth and creamy and are so easy to apply...see for yourself!

Here's a video of our cool Texture Crackle!

Here's some of the other videos available:

Texture Fierro Paint
Texture Terra Cotta
Texture Terra Cotta
Paintable Texture Thick & Texture Fine
Paintable Texture Stucco
Paintable Texture Glass

That's my friend Diane (and one of my DecoArt moms) speaking in the videos...by the way, if you ever want to hear me, go to this page and click on Foam Paint. I just listened to it and I sound really country! I don't realize I have such an accent until I hear myself back. Yikes! That's always scary to hear!

Let me know what you think and I'll pass it on! I'd love to hear your feedback on the videos and what you think of the paint!

Oh, and feel free to post these videos on your blog/site and help us get the word out about this cool product. I think it would be great for mixed media projects and beautiful home décor!

Until next time Swellions!

Pixiepalooza

pixiepalooza

In honor of Halloween, i'd like to share 5 interesting facts about my little black cat Pixie!

1. She has a little, skinny face and a big belly. Admittedly, I feed her too much. I can't handle that little meow when she follows me into the bathroom and I always give her some food. She's kinda swayback too, her back sinks in and then her belly almost scoots on the floor as she runs. It's a funny sight.

2. She's a BIG scaredy cat. She's even still scared by sudden movements I make. She likes to be dominant and in control. She's not scared of me when I'm in a normal spot like my bed or computer chair (where she can relax right next to me in her own chair). She also isn't timid when I sit on the couch. I've used her as a head pillow before and she doesn't mind, but the minute I turn around to face her, she darts right off the back of the couch.

3. She doesn't really like meat like chicken, tuna, new foods, etc. If I ever pick off a little piece of mine to give her, she just sniffs and goes on her way. Not very interested at all, though she did dig a few small nibbles of Kraft cheese I gave her once.

4. She has a few favorite spots...she loves sitting in her chair in front of my bedroom window, under my bed, and on my shelf in my closet. Otherwise, she's very random and unpredictable in the places she chooses to be.

5. She's so good when it comes to not bothering stuff. I've never had her bother my Christmas tree or had her knock stuff off. She doesn't get on counters or tables very often...only caught her doing that a time or two. She does occasionaly play with buttons/craft supplies she finds that she can cup into her paws. She's not much into store bought toys. The favorite thing that I know she likes are some little plastic cherries that I have on a dish. She can bat those for hours and never get tired of it!

Bonus: I think she goes to do the door after I leave and sits there for a little bit. I've had to rush back in to get stuff before and I always find that she is running away from the door. Does this mean she misses me? I don't know, but I kinda do like the thought. It's sweet (and swell).

I hope you enjoyed these my little black cat factoids. She's really a very sweet girl to me (other people find her shyness and scaredy cat nature kinda annoying). She's definitely going to be found safe and sound inside my apartment on Halloween! I've heard that people do awful things to little black kitties on that day. Sad.

Until next time Swellions!

Awesome Halloween finds at Coffee Times

A very quick post tonight, but wanted to check in with some super cute finds they had at my local Coffee Shop, Coffee Times! They always have the best and most clever Halloween gifts there!

Alligator Dish with Leg Spreader
Alligator dish with foot spreader
The dish could hold crackers or the like or spread I guess. The leg pulls out and has a spreading knife on the end. So funny!

Glitterville Buckets
I heart glitterville!
They've actually had these the past couple of years, but I can never get enough of them!

Skull Chandelier
Skull chandelier
They always have a couple of high price ticket items like this skull chandelier. Me likey, but can't affordey.

Skull Decanter
Skull decanter
This is so awesome too! Love the shiny black look. I'd probably put Kool-aid in here (drinking's not my thing)...ha, but not the Jim Jones variety.

Skeleton Journal
Cool Halloween journal
Coolest.journal.ever. I just wish it wasn't $35. I always have good intentions with journals like these, but I would want to have nice handwriting and drawing skills to actually mark in this, and I'm lacking both!

Well, I still haven't figured out a costume!!! Time is running out, Swellions.

Terrorific Tuesday: Week 4

terrorific-tuesday-week-4

This month has flown by as fast as a witch on her broom! Can you believe we've completed 4 Terrorific Tuesdays?? Well, unfortunately this is the last Terrorific Tuesday of the year and I'd like to thank everyone who participated and shared their project or idea! Hopefully everyone had some fun and got some good traffic to their site...oh, and I also hope everyone came away from this with some positive inspiration and ideas up their sleeve for the few final days of the holiday and next year too! I wish that all my ideas could come to be by October 31st. I really do try my darndest, but I can't do it all! I know you guys probably feel that way too! Doing a project a week is a LOT of work. All the designers and artists who participated know this...so for you non-artist or crafter types, this stuff doesn't magically brew itself up! It's the result of a dash of time and patience, a pinch of technical know-how, and a handful of creativity! Mix all that in with a whole lot of passion and you've got a wonderful brew!

So without further fanfare (and melted cheese), I present to you the fourth and final Terrorific Thursday!

Spooky Jewels Katie Hacker strings this red and black set using a Fresh resin pendant, polka dots, and metal skulls.

Fangtastic figurines Retta a.k.a. Attercat breaks out the polymer clay and whips up some glow-in-the-dark figurines.

Cool canister Serena the Crafty Mom revamps a bargain bin canister into an awesome Halloween decoration!

Gothic Pink Melissa J. Lee explores the spooky side of one of her favorite pastel colors.

"Eye"gor pin cushion Kiki of Kiki's Craft World knits up this eye-catching pin cushion bracelet.

Stamped paper coffin Kate Pullen, the Rubber Stamping Guide at about.com folds and stamps up this little coffin box that Dracula would envy!

Fun party food ideas Amy at Living Locurto threw a Halloween party and came up with tons of great ideas for the food table including this adorable witch cake!

Double the goodness from Margot! The Impatient Crafter™’s final Terrorific Tuesday offering is a two part story of friendship, Goth Style. Here are links to see Morticia Invites Miss Havisham to Tea and The Invitation.

Spiderman pendant (but not the Spiderman you're thinking) Kim Ripley a.k.a. Stoopidgerl pours up a glittery sweet skull and crossbones resin necklace.

Quick & easy polka dot treat cups Alexa Westerfield a.k.a. Swelldesigner shows you how to make quick and easy Halloween treat cups sure to wow your guests!

3 brand new Halloween jewelry projects! Tammy Powley, the Jewelry Guide at About.com does an all-nighter (almost) as she pushes for a few more Halloween jewelry projects, including a super cool sterling silver spider, a glass framed mixed-media Halloween-themed pendant, and to top it off, a silver headless skeleton charm.

Fast & Fun Halloween Boa Sarah E. White, About.com's Knitting Guide knits up this super cute boa perfect for those chilly fall nights!

Dia De Los Muertos Cigar Box Shrine Kathy Cano-Murillo a.k.a. The Crafty Chica honors the Day of the Dead with this beautiful shrine.

Happy Haunting Greeting Card Phyllis Dobbs treats us once again with this cute Halloween card, perfect for all your favorite goblins!

Gypsy Traditions Lorilyn Hurley of the Dream Life shares a touching story of her family's love for Halloween & their passion for playing dress up at their annual party!

Boo Bucket Michelle McGee crafts up a spooky and scary bucket that will leave goose bumps on all your guests!

Vintage Postcard Banner
Kris Tuey aka: the Collage Contessa
has made it official. Now you know exactly what time it is when you walk into her house. It's HALLOWEEN time! This vintage project using fun Halloween postcards is so simple you can even entice the kids to help as well!

Fall Wall Hanging
Kim of Sew Sugary Sweet
stitches this wonderful and whimsical wall hanging for her Fall Swap partner.

Honestly, this was a lot of work for me to do. I'm not sure at this point if I will do this again next year. I don't want to say for sure yes, but it's a possibility. I may try to do a big post around early December as well packed with great Christmas projects, but I'm afraid a project a week for December is just too much for me to coordinate. I'm sure you guys understand! If anyone has suggestions or would like to do the links and I do the graphic, I might be up for that. I just don't think I can do it all. I'd be open to your suggestions...so e-mail me at swelldesigner@yahoo.com

And in closing, I say farewell to Terrorific Tuesdays and so does my precious little black cat Pixie!

Super easy polka dot treat cups

Favorable

Halloween décor and party favors shouldn't break the bank! I'm always scoping out ways to create quick easy crafts on the cheap and I did just that with this project. These would be perfect for party favors or handing out candy to kids at school or trick or treaters. Also, this is an idea you can take into other seasons as well! Choose red silo cups for Christmas or yellow ones for little Easter favor baskets! Fun and simple!

Super Easy polka dot treat cups

Supplies:
– Silo cups
– Americana Acrylic paint in color of choice
– hole punch
– pipe cleaners in colors of your choice
– tulle in color of choice
– pouncer brush
– paint palette or paper plate

Instructions:
1. Load pouncer brush with paint and dab off excess onto plate or paper towel. Pounce dots all over cups randomly. Let dry.
2. Pounce two holes on opposite sides with hole punch. Insert pipe cleaner through holes and twist to for a secure handle.
3. Wrap small strip of tulle in a bow or knot at top of pipe cleaner.
4. Fill with candy or treats and delight your ghouls and goblins!

Check back tomorrow for the final Terrorific Tuesday roundup! I hope you've enjoyed all these little roundups. It's been a lot of work, but very fun and everyone who has participated seems to have really enjoyed doing it!

Have a happy Monday!

To be a kid again this Halloween...

DSCF0187

So it's not everyday you see kiddos on my blog, but this is an adorable pic of my niece and nephew, Brock and Taylor as a Pink Bunny and Indiana Jones! My mom the oh-so-talented seamstress made both of these costumes like she does every year for them. If this isn't super cute, I don't know what is!!!

I really hope they enjoy these years dressing up and trick or treating. Halloween is such a magical time in a child's life. Even though you know I love Halloween and get excited by the smallest little thing, I miss the excitement I felt as a kid around this time of year. Little things like going trick or treating and rummaging through candy afterwards, getting to play games at a fall festival, and feeling the anticipation of a Halloween party at school, are things I look back fondly and wistfully on. Excitement back then was so pure and simple, but now adding on daily tasks and struggles weighs me down a lot, and I'm sure it does others too.

I really need to make it my goal to not get to overwhelmed by the Holiday that I don't get to enjoy it. Maybe simple things like going on a ghost walk, eating pumpkin goods, and just sitting in the dark as my hot pink and orange lights glow is the thing I need to do to reconnect with that little girl I once was.

What are you going to do to reconnect with your inner child this Halloween?

And the winner of the Pumpkin Man Box is...

Vintage-inspired Halloween Pumpkin box + tutorial

The results are in for the Pumpkin man box contest!!! I had my trusty friend Mr. Spikey Greenball preside over the drawing. He did a stand up job (well, actually he doesn't have legs, but you get the point). Heres him with all the entries!

The entries are in!

I folded them and stirred up the bowl. Mr. Spikey Greenball kept a watchful eye!

Stir them up!

Too much of a watchful eye! Hey...NO PEEKING!!!

No peeking!

And the winner is...

And the winner is...Joanne Kennedy!

JOANNE KENNEDY! YAY! Mr. Spikey Greenball got so excited that he wore your name as a hair accessory. He's so metrosexual! Send me your address at swelldesigner@yahoo.com and I'll get it shipped out to you! I really appreciate everyone who participated. I wish I could send one to all of you guys. You're all so awesome, but alas, I just have one.

Congrats Joanne! I hope you find a special place to display him! He wants to show off afterall!!! Kinda like Mr. Spikey Greenball!

Wednesday is Lensday: Pumpkin Patch Edition

jumping in the pumpkin patch

Yep, that's me above getting some air in the pumpkin patch at Evan's Orchard outside of Lexington towards Georgetown. Much love to my friend Chris Garris (the most fabulous photographer I know) who shot this using his wide angle lens. I'm in actuality only 3 or 4 feet off the ground. His low viewpoint + that lens makes it look more like 10 feet. Probably one of the coolest pictures of me to date!

I got some pics of my own including a jumpy shot of Chris too! Here's him!

pumpkin jump

We had a very amusing time filled with lots of photo taking....there was a petting zoo, patch, kettle corn (I got pumpkin spice), bee exhibit, apple orchard and of course lots of piles of pumpkins & gourds!

yep, it's halloween
These are Chris's shoes. Aren't they super cool and very appropriate for this time of year?

camel call
This camel was shuttling children around. He kept mooing/yelling (what kind of sound do camels make anyway?) whenever a kid got on. I think he was a disgruntled camel. I think I would be too if I had to go around the same path time and time again.

pumpkins in black and white
Chris insisted that I make this shot black and white, because the sun created a lot of contrast that day!

infectious
He ended up buying one of these pumpkins/gourds. He thinks that they should be clearanced because inevitably, they are the ones that aren't going to be sold. He liked it cause it was diseased (he thought it looked like something else that is rather communicable) and because it had more character than a regular pumpkin.

pumpkin portrait
To me, this picture says fall.

photographer of the corn
Man, he can be so corny. I can be even more, just by using that bad pun.

gourdelicious
Gourds really do have a lot of character.

going for a ride
And so does Chris. He insisted on riding in the wagon while I got a workout. I think the parents at the place thought we were a wee bit crazy. Such is life.

Hope you enjoyed my pics. I plan on posting later the winner of this little guy!
Vintage-inspired Halloween Pumpkin box + tutorial
So check back tonight (and get your comment in here to win him if you haven't done so already)!

Until next time Swellions!

Colorful crafty photo day!

Yo yo. This week is just flying by! I am a busy bee as of late. Spent last night trying to actually organize some things. I don't know about you, but I have to be in the mood to that and then when I'm on it, I'm on it! If I get distracted or have to go somewhere, everything goes to pot. I just have to be in that mode. I get really frustrated when I clean/organize for two nights in a row and get really excited about my progress, and then have a string of out of town/out on the town activities to do. It's not that I don't enjoy doing these things, but by the time I get back into organizing again, my place is worse or and I have to start over all over again! Ugh!

So, I took a few photos last night that I wanted to share. They're crafty inspirations, I guess you would say. I'm actually thinking about selling some of my old scrapbook/paper craft stuff like these things and putting items into mini bundles on etsy or ebay. I have a lot of things I just don't use and they are just sitting around not being used (the types of things I bought for just one project, but have no use for otherwise)...if I can make a little bit of money off of them, I'd rather do that than just hand them off to Goodwill, ya know?

A kinda corny post

Well, it’s Monday already. I hope everyone had an awesome weekend. Mine was pretty good. One of the many things I did was going to a corn maze at Kelley Farms near right outside of Lexington. As I kid, I always romanticized in my mind the idea of those English garden mazes. I always thought I wanted to go and figure it out. This corn maze was along that same idea, but wasn’t quite as mesmerizing as I thought it would be. First off, they gave you a map and there wasn’t a get to point a to point b kind of route. It was more just a fun trek through some tall and short corn (at some points the corn was only 3 feet high, other points, it seemed to be 12 feet high). Then if you lost your way, you could figure out details of the maze that helped lead you back to the starting point.

The actual maze was shaped like Abraham Lincoln with words as show here:

corn maze map

Actually, here's a link here with an aeriel view if you want to see what it looks like.

So, when I referred to “figuring out details”, certain shapes were indicative of his collar, ear, a letter, etc.

I went in a big group of 10 or so, some really cool friends I hadn’t seen in a while. Throughout the maze there were other little packs of people, some young, some family, and some scared. We weren’t corny than scared, though, I will admit this does look kinda scary.

children of the corn maze

They had some really cute festive setups. I like the way these lights lit up the pumpkins below and the cornstalks made a nice backdrop as well.

Halloween pumpkin up in lights

I have still yet to go on a trip to an actual pumpkin patch this year, so we will see if I go back there. I’ll probably go to an orchard outside of Lexington in Georgetown.

On a final note, be sure to get all your links into me today for Terrorific Tuesdays. I need them by 6pm eastern time and if you could...could you please write up a little blurb. It will help me out a lot!

Until next time Swellions!

A Costume Masterpiece

me in my mona lisa canvas

Hello all! 3 weeks to the big day and I’m here again with an inspiring canvas costume idea that you can do if you are in a jam to get a costume together. This is a fun and very simple project and something you can take in a variety of directions...you could place yourself into a variety of famous paintings. At the bottom of this post, I’ve expanded upon some ideas you can do. I think I completed it in an hour or so, but I ended up walking away with 2nd place overall for my effort at my work’s contest. Halloween costumes aren’t always about the expensive stuff you by at your local costume shot, they are about infusing your own creativity and personality into them. I plan on sharing a few of my other past costume ideas in the weeks to come.

Supplies:
– Various paints and paintbrushes
– scissors/exacto knife
– 16x20 white canvas
– pencil
– photo of a famous masterpiece to go by

Instructions:
1. Draw out your general design, and draw an oval a little bit smaller than your head onto the canvas. Using an exacto knife, punch through the canvas. Use scissors to cut around the drawn oval. Look into a mirror and determine if it needs to be large. Continue cutting oval shape until your head fits comfortably in place. In general, it’s better to start out small with your cut out shape so that you don’t make the hole too large. I wanted the hole for my head to only fit in part of my face...I didn’t want to make it so big that I could fit my whole head through.

2. Continue drawing/modifying your design to fit the oval cut out. Paint your canvas to look like painting. Let dry.

3. In my case, I ended up wearing a long black dress with long sleeves to match the look of the mona lisa robe/dress. This helps add to the illusion.

4. Now go out there and win that contest!!!

I actually got this idea from a version I had seen of of someone putting their head into the Marilyn Monroe Andy Warhol painting. For the life of me, I can’t find a pic, but her head was stuck through this image:

images

You could do other classic masterpieces as well. Try one of these on for size:

Vermeer's "Girl with the Pearl Earring" (Bonus points if you're Scarlett Johanssen)
300px-Johannes_Vermeer_(1632-1675)_-_The_Girl_With_The_Pearl_Earring_(1665)

A Frida Kahlo self-portrait
frida-kahlo-self-protrait-1940

Munch's "The Scream"
scream

And if you are looking for a couples costume, you could go as this:
Wood's "American Gothic"
10032250

If you are around more arty types of people, I'm sure you could do something a little less mainstream, but I think these images are pretty iconic that most people from all walks of life have seen.

Well, gotta get back to it! Until next time Swellions!

A Halloween food flop!

Hello all. THere's a lot of projects I've been doing on here that have turned out pretty successful, but for every successful project, there's a disastrous one waiting in the wings...case in point, this:

caramel apples

Last year, when I made these apples, I envisioned them to be beautiful and perfect, with colorful sprinkles, nuts, and chocolate chips. I actually envisioned them to look very much like these beauties from Country Living:

caramel apples from country living

You can actually find the recipe for these here

Mine didn't turn out at all and they embarrassed me at my party. I actually didn't finish wrapping them with ribbon around the sticks, cause they weren't the perfect ones that I had hoped for. Well, for starters, I didn't really follow the recipe they had given and I did it my own way. I dipped them too soon or something. Does anyone have the pointers, cause I sure need some help.

It is nice to know that some people have good results. For example, check these out that Velvet Strawberries made. Her version is just as pretty as the original, if not more (she has a beautiful blog, does she not?)

I'm honestly not a very good 3-dimensional artist other than jewelry work, I always struggled with it in college. I think that I usually pull it together in the end, but it's not ever exactly what I envisioned it to be. I think that is why I struggle more with the food crafts. Someone told me the crescent roll wrapped mummies that I made for a party a couple of years back were kinda scary and unappetizing. I really did my best. That darn mustard just came out to big for the eyes and details. It messed the whole look up!

What kind of Halloween disasters have you faced? I'd be curious to know.

Until next time Swellions

Bozo & the Grand Prize Game

Here at the Swell Life, I don't discuss the economic meltdown, rising gas prices, or the lack of universal healthcare like some folks do. In fact, I'm not voting for either of the major candidates in this critical election, I'm casting my ballot for an old favorite...Bozo the Clown!

bozo makes me smile

Well, not actually, but I had to throw in a little political talk, especially since I just watched the town hall debate...anyway...

I took this picture a few days ago at a flea mall and I did briefly wonder if I needed it, but I have so much stuff already and well, you know how it is.

I loved watching Bozo as a kid. We would have to sit in the library when we first got to school and this was always playing on WGN while we waited for the first class to begin. He was so NOT a creepy clown, he was warm and funny and genuine and I could even sense that as a child, which I'm sure was his appeal. I always thought He was really good with children, always bending down to their level and giving them a little side hug and encouragement when they were shy or embarrassed.

I remember how funny Bozo was as he razzed Cooky the clown and the other cast o' characters. Here's a pic of the Bozo and Cooky I remember:

MBC History_23

Oh, and here's a great article about the Bozo show that enjoyed reading and I know you will too!

But the one thing that I recall and loved more than anything was the GRAND PRIZE GAME!

I thought this was the ultimate game as a kid. I just loved it and dreamed of being on the show and getting to play it. I loved watching Bozo reach into the big giant barrel of mailed-in letters and pull out an envelope of both at boy and girl at home that would get matching prizes of the players that played in the studio. I always thought I would send in really colorful and funky envelope littered with stickers that Bozo would just have to choose...something that would stand out from all the stark white envelopes in the barrel.

I loved when Bozo pulled out that ticket stub and chose a boy and girl from the audience to play the game, but admittedly, I was always disappointed when it was a little kid, like 2 or 3 that was randomly chosen from the audience. I knew that they weren't capable of winning the grand prize and that it was going to be a really short round. I found this picture of Flickr user sleepoverjesus with Bozo on the Bozo show set (looks much smaller than I remember it being on TV). He got to actually play the game!!!

For anyone not familiar with the GRAND PRIZE GAME, it was a series of metal buckets in a line with the numbers 1-6 on them (I found this fun pic on Flickr of a replica...looks like it's at a Chucky Cheese type venue). Contestants got just one chance to hit the first bucket, second bucket, and so on. Well, this was the case except when a little kid (the 2 or 3 year old I referenced above) missed the very first bucket. Bozo could let the kid go home empty handed. He always let them try again until they got their ping pong ball in the bucket.

The first prize would always be something like a box of Little Debbie Oatmeal Cream pies and a pack of Topps baseball cards or the like. Usually Cookie the clown brought them out on a platter to show off, very Vanna-like. As the kid got their ping pong ball into each bucket, they got a better prize, anything from a cool action figure to a baby doll or a remote controlled car. But the GRAND PRIZE was always something really cool...a trip to Disney World or a Schwinn bicycle for them and the kid at home.

I rarely ever saw this achieved. As much as it seems like an easy concept, it really wasn't. As ping pong balls do, they bounced up and down and all around. Occasionally the kids sank the ball into the bucket, but most of the time it hopped out and ended their turn. I think I only saw 1 boy actually win (how very Who wants to be a Millionaire of it!). I remember him jumping up and being so excited. I was excited too! Watching him hit that 6th bucket was like watching the winner being announced on Americana Idol. I was on pins and needles sitting Indian style in that library floor!

Just to let you know how nutty I really was about this game...I set up a version using tins and trash cans at home in my bedroom and used one of those little bouncy balls as my ping pong ball. Unfortunately, I didn't win any cool prizes.

I actually went a few years ago to the Museum of Broadcast Communications in Chicago and saw the props from the show and the GRAND PRIZE GAME in all it's glory. Actually, it was stuffed in a room and it looked kinda sad. I really wish I was as photo happy as I am now, I would have gotten a picture for sure!

A couple of years ago, I saw this replica in a decor/kids mag and hmmm....I bet my nephews and niece would like to play it with me. I'd even let them keep it at my house!

Do you remember the Bozo Show and have fun Bozo memories to share??

Spooky Googly Eyed Crafts

I had so many ideas that I wanted to do today. Just in my ride home, I came up with ten terrorific possibilities, but in the mind of swell, you have to reel it in and stay focused. Knowing that I wanted to do a lot of ideas, I stuck to a theme and stayed within the lines of all things googly eyes. You may remember the googly eye choker that I did a few months back that was really well received. Well, I wanted to expand this idea and come up with some really fun and easy crafts that anyone can do...I'm going to share the basic idea of how to achieve these looks, but if you want more info, please e-mail me at swelldesigner@yahoo.com and I'll give you more details...OK, on with the show!

Googly eye frame + googly eye photo
googly eye frame
To get this look, paint a $1 frame (I got mine at Michaels) with DecoArt Americana Acrylic paint. Then use a craft glue like Krazy Glue or E-6000 to glue various sizes of googly eyes onto the frame. Print out a picture to fit the frame and insert it into the opening of the frame (If you notice, I used the Terrorific Tuesday mascot, my black cat Pixie). Glue googly eyes to the picture and hang. I got the idea to put googly eyes onto the picture from one of Jennifer Perkin's (the Naughty Secretary) photos. Click here to see that creation.

Striped headband with Googly Eyed flower
googly eye button flower headband
I wanted to create a fun accessory that would be something a little different for Halloween. I painted this headband form and sealed it, but you can also wrap it with ribbon and glue gun it if you'd rather have that look. On my version, I actually wrapped Rainbow Tape around it, but you can also wrap ribbon if you want. On a large button, I placed a medium sized googly eye in the center using Krazy Glue. I then glued several smaller googly eyes around it to complete the look. I glued it off to one side of the headband and voila, I have a super cute googly eyed flower headband!

Googly Eyed Pumpkin
googly eye pumpkin
I purchased really small faux pumpkins at Wal-mart for a dollar. I glued on googly eyes in two different sizes with Krazy Glue (yes, it was intentional-ha ha) Using a liner brush, I brushed on the features with Americana Acrylic paint in black (you could also use a permanent marker if you didn't have paint) I added in additional hair and eyebrows and put on a bow for a completed look. This is really quick craft especially for little hands.

Googly Eyed Charm Necklace
eyesee you
I actually created this last year, but I thought someone would perhaps enjoy it for Halloween accessorizing. I painted a 1.5" wooden disk with Americana Acrylics, then used E-6000 to adhere the mini googly eyes on it. I left a small hole at top for drilling. I then mixed up some Envirotex Lite to coat the charm following packaging directions (lay your charm on wax paper for this process - trust me on this one). Let dry for several days, then use small drill to drill into resin and disk. Thread jewelry cord through disk and it's ready to wear! All eyes will be on you!

Googly Eyed Choker
googly eye choker
Another fun idea to try is this choker. I cut a piece of felt about 1.5" inch wide and the length to be shorter than my neck diameter. I then added ribbon clinch clasps at both ends. Using jump rings and chain, I made a final closure at the end. I then used super duper fabric glue to adhere the googly eyes to the felt. I think this has a whimsical gothic feel to it. This could also be made into a wrist cuff or headband if you are so inspired.

And finally, probably the easiest of all the googly eyed crafts...

Googly Eyed Earrings
eye earrings You simply adhere large googly eyes to earring post blanks and let dry. You can also add the googly eye to a ring blank or brooch pin for a wearable conversation starter!

On a final note, if you go to Flickr and type in googly you can see all kinds of cool and creative pictures and inspiration. It is really worth a look. And if you notice at the top of the matching results, you can change it to be most relevant, most recent or most interesting. Most interesting is the way to go in this search!

Hope you had fun with the googly eye crafts. I know I did. Check back tomorrow! I'll post the other projects created for Terrorific Tuesday then!

Until next time Swellions!

My scary Bill Cosby moment

Last night I went shopping at the mall. I realized two things...

1) I can no longer wear juniors fashions. Guess it must have been turning 30 or something. No really, I haven't been able to wear these styles for a while. They are just not cut out for my curves and an X-Large, usually in a real woman's size is actually a medium. So even if a friend suggests otherwise, if you are over 30, you should avoid this section at all costs (If you brave though, enter at your own risk)

2) Just because something looks good on the rack, doesn't means it looks good on...case in point, this:

my bill cosby sweater moment

The pattern on the rack looked kinda 80's, but cool in a blue and black leopard print sorta way. I put it on and realized that I was wearing a sweater I would have seen on the Cosby Show, Perfect Strangers, or heck, even Too Close for Comfort! Talk about terrorific! Is this not one of the most hideous looks you've seen in a while? I didn't know what to do, so I just stood there making this shocked and stunned face in the mirror. Also, it didn't help that I had my black, too tight work pants on that aren't the most flattering. Geez, I know this is pretty darn bad, so don't go signing me up for What not to Wear, ok?

Well, in other non-fashion faux pas news, I'm going to Keeneland tomorrow and I found an extra cute top that did fit (it was from the women's section). I'm going to pair that with some heels and new jeans from Old Navy. I wanted to wear a dress, but I couldn't find anything I just loved at a reasonable price. I will still feel stylin' though in what I did get.

Hope you guys have a great weekend! Send me your Terrorific Tuesday projects this weekend and Monday by 6 at the latest. I can't wait to see your wonderful concoctions Swellions! I did want to add that if you don't have a blog, but have a flickr site, you can send me your link as well. Just as long as I have something to link to and that you can explain your idea/concept, everyone is welcome to participate!

Until next time,
Alexa

Feeling like it's a photo day

I am not in a bloggy mood...more of a photo mood today :) I did want to share 5 super quick and random things...

1. First off, I was featured today on 365 Halloween today. Also, I was featured on One Pretty Thing. Super stoked about both of those.

2. I got a headache today from talking too much. Yeah, I do that sometimes.

3. I want you to check out my awesome friend Kelly Toon's website (that is really her real last name). She is an absolutely amazing artist who specializes in caricatures. She's so uber talented. Also, she is so wise beyond her years and insightful. I really want to hang out with her and her husband Justin really soon!

4. I had a wonderful birthday and want to thank everyone who made it super special. You guys are the best!

5. I am going shopping tonight with my friend Jessica. I think we are going to hit up Old Navy as well as a couple of places in the mall. My super sweet boyfriend got me a awesome gift card to the mall and Godiva! He's mine ladies. Hands off! Ha ha.

Now onto the photos...

I'm 30 today

Today I am 30. I didn't feel any different turning 30 today than I had turning any of my birthdays in my 20's. The only twinge I got was seeing 30 in print on a card, but eh, I guess I'll get over it. Today I still danced a little, did a really bad Sarah Palin impersonation, played my Britney Spears on my Iphone really loud, and slept in. Yeah, nothing has changed. And the day's not even over yet!

Actually, last night, my friend Molly and I went to Billy's BBQ, a Lexington establishment (Voted best BBQ in local papers). We were just having a standard conversation when my friend Steve (I finally remembered his blog link!) walked up and sat down. I was like, "Huh?". It was so surreal. I don't get to see him too often and it was a super nice treat and super special that he would come all the way from Louisville for my big day. Then about 3 minutes later, Carl walked in. I wasn't expecting him either. I sat there shocked still when both Carl's wife, Cynthia and Andrea walked in! They had all come in town just for my day. I had joked to Molly a month or so back that I've never had a real "surprise party" and that I'm always hard to be surprised, but she totally got me and she got me good this time! Cynthia, Molly, and Andrea ended up staying the night and we went to IHOP this morning. It was a really good time! I decided to take my b-day off today to hang out with Molly, so it all worked out just as she had planned (MWAH HA HA). It was so nice to spend time with everyone.

Here's a pic...

30th bday surprise

Well, going to get up and do something! Until next time Swellions!
