Random pic & some cool links I like!

illuminated
A very random pic (I took it last week while I made a Panera stop) and a very quick post tonight, for that I'm sure!

Going through my reader, I came across some really cool items/articles I wanted to share with you!

I'm really looking forward to the weekend! I'm currently pooped, so very small post for me tonight. The next one will be better, I promise!

Until next time Swellions!

Some things you just can't throw away...

april - outer space

So, last night I featured my pin-up shrine, and tonight I thought I would share a few more images from that 2004 Cynthia Hart calendar that those images came from. I'm pretty sure my mom bought this for me as a Christmas present a few years back. I love all things retro/kitsch as you prob. already know, so this one is one I hung onto. I think my favorite of the pages is the one you see above...soooo campy. Love it!

Anyway, here's some more from the other months that I want to frame or do a project of some kind with. The only problem is that some of them have images that run onto the large 12x12 page :( I guess I can just cover them up or leave them be...and of course there's that pesky drill hole, but I don't think the majority of people would even care or notice if it was framed in one of those scrapbook/LP art-type frames.

september - bowling
Everyone loves bowling! Especially pin-up girls!

october - western
I can't help but think of my dad when I see this one. He LOVES westerns and even watches them on the Western channel on the satellite. He is excited I'm in California now, since many of the westerns were filmed around these parts.

february - family
I wonder what little Tommy is yelling? If it were today, he'd prob. be burping at his sister.

soda fountain
And everyone loves a good ol' soda fountain shop! I used to go to one in Stanford, KY called Coleman's that had all the old components and stools. A couple weeks ago, I noticed there was a soda fountain inside of a popular drugstore chain down the street, but it was bit more modernized (not as cool).

So do you see why I have such a hard time parting with it? Do you keep old tossable artwork around like this that you can't live without?

Until next time Swellions!

Pretty Pin-up Shrine

pretty pin-up shrine

This is a project I whipped up over the weekend using the Crafty Chica™ Love Shrine™ Workshop in a Box™ as shown here (with all its contents).

Crafty Chica™ Love Shrine™ Workshop in a Box™

I have always, always loved these little shrine boxes that Crafty Chica developed with Duncan Enterprises (a.k.a. the company I work for). I was super excited when the whole line came out last year at CHA! It was something very fresh and different and bold and glittery! The one thing I admire about Kathy Cano-Murillo (the Crafty Chica) is that she really wants people to explore their own creativity and to make things their own. That's what I tried to do with this project.

While her style is much more Mexican pop art, my style is much more retro meets modern kitsch and I wanted to celebrate that in my shrine. I also wanted to finally do something with some great images I got from a Cynthia Hart's Retro Calendar from 2004. Oh, and the center image is Gil Elvgren Pin-up Postcard book.

Pin-up page in old calendar

I chose pin-ups, cause I wanted to place my shrine in my pin-up/glamourized bathroom. I currently have a couple of other 50's images in there and I thought I could somehow mount it onto the wall. I'm sure a little mounting bracket will work just fine! Anyway, I decorated it with craft paint, glitter, Glam it Up Iron-on Crystals (I love adding bling for earrings on images like this), and the contents of the kit (there's a lot of goodies that come with the kit, so you prob. won't end up using it all, but it's nice to have options!).

I just wanted to share this little project this Fat Tuesday! Until next time Swellions!

new friends, my sushi experience, and a b-day shoutout

Peanut Butter Piepalooza!

peanut butter piepalooza

One of my all-time favorite desserts is peanut butter pie! My version is very creamy and rich and fluffy! Tomorrow is a potluck at work (for Mardi Gras) and I decided to make my fave dessert for the occasion. I got the recipe for this pie from this version on All Recipe's site. I thought I would share it on here too, so here goes:

Peanut Butter No-Bake Pie
Yield: 2 pies; 16 servings

INGREDIENTS:
– 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
– 1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
– 1 cup peanut butter
– 1 cup milk
– 1 (16 ounce) package frozen whipped topping, thawed
– 2 (9 inch) prepared graham cracker crusts

DIRECTIONS
1. Beat together cream cheese and confectioners' sugar. Mix in peanut butter and milk. Beat until smooth. Fold in whipped topping.
2. Spoon into two 9 inch graham cracker pie shells; cover, and freeze until firm.

Note: You can substitute reduced fat cream cheese and frozen whipped topping for this recipe, but I don't recommend using the fat-free versions. Once I made it totally with the fat-free whipped topping and cream cheese and it turned out super runny.

Hope you enjoyed this fast and quick recipe! I should be posting a little podcast tonight in a few, so please check in with me in a few!

Until next time Swellions!

Fonty Love

I love fonts and all the possibilities you have for design with them! I'm a stickler for a good grunge, decorative, or handwriting font! I love using them especially for headlines to make something stand out!

I'm pretty picky about what I like, but I wanted to share 3 fonts I found that I think are super cool. I screen captured these images from www.dafont.com. They have such a wide/varied selection on there of really awesome fonts. And while you are there, check out the cool dingbats too! They'd be great for printing out stickers or embellishments for a scrapbook page, home décor item, or jewelry project! Like www.istockphoto.com you can spend hours scouting out new stuff! Here's 3 I just loved! How about you?

Make your own custom stickers + a look back at my sticker collection

stickers on sticker paper

How many times have you printed out something on sticky paper only to end up cutting it out and leaving a large portion of the rest of the page? And most times, you can't feed it back through the machine once the image is cut out, You are usually left sticky paper that inevitably gets thrown away. Here's a easy solution to use up all those scraps...custom stickers!

It's really something fun and quick that you can do that let's you reconnect with drawing or lettering if you've been out of the loop for awhile. As you can see below, I just drew a bunch of random shapes and words all over the page. There really was no rhyme or reason. And even if you aren't quite sure of your drawing skills, you can still make funny stickers! Why not try a basic smiley face, bubble letters, funny stick men in action, or quote bubbles? This would also be great to do with kids. They would love creating custom stickers that they could use to seal envelopes for a party or for a special letter to Grandma!

make your own custom stickers

I simply used inexpensive markers (and some Sharpies...they are personally my fave marker, but I didn't do all of these stickers with them). I drew the design, let it dry, and then cut out around it. It's as simple as that!

Oh, and speaking of stickers...here's a little trip down memory lane (and possibly some inspiration for you). When I was 6 or 7, my sister Sophia gave me her sticker collection. It came in a bright green Trapper Keeper!! Back then, stickers were like gold! I remember fishing in the cereal boxes for ones with Michael Jackson on them! I'm betting you had some of these too!

smelly stickers
Smelly stickers always were rockin'! But they often times were pretty disappointing!

muppets, gizmo, and more!
Muppets, Gizmo, Captain Crunch, oh my!

holographic stickers were the holy grail
Back then holographic stickers were the holy grail of all stickers!

barbie stickers
I always loved this layered Barbie sticker...ooh oh-so risque!

random stickers
I loved the neon South of the Border one! I guess some things never change! How cool is that Gadzooka and the Superman stickers too?

5 things I'm noticing about Fresno

fresh lemons

1. People have a lot of fruit trees. The lemons above came from my co-workers lemon tree. How cool is that? In Kentucky, I was lucky to get the occasional tomato or cucumber during the summer, but here people bring in fruits year-round to share. That lemon was the bomb in my diet coke, BTW.

2. People around here make a LOT of U-turns. It is acceptable, too...the signs even say it's ok to do it. I still get a bit nervous when I do it now, cause back home, you'd get a ticket for doing it. It's not something I'm feeling too comfortable doing.

3. There are a lot of people who stand on street corners here advertising stuff. Back home, I saw an occasional guy trying to promote the "Hot 'n Ready" pizza deal from Little Caesars, but here right next to the tax place, I have seen 4 people dressed as the Statue of Liberty on each corner of the intersection. Also, it's not uncommon for you to pull up to a fast food place and have someone there to take your order. For some reason, it was told it helps productivity and efficiency in getting you through the drive through. Beats me.

4. And I thought Lexington had a lot of Starbucks! On Shaw Avenue, the main drag next to my house, there are 3 within a mile of each other. I guess people really like their morning espresso and muffin!

5. The same goes for Target...there's like 10 in this town! I think Target here is like Wal-mart back home. There's a couple of Wal-marts here, but honestly I haven't had a need to go to any for groceries or anything. There's just a lot more options and you know the headache you get when you go in that place. Maybe it's for the best anyway. Ha ha.

Well, must get ready for bed. Until next time Swellions!

A quick project + hopefully making new friends!

snakeskin shell earrings

So, I made the above project for a co-worker. I hope she likes them! I think she makes jewelry too, so I don't know what she'll think!

I searched for the past couple of hours online for ways to make new friends. I know that to make friends you have to put yourself out there, but I think it's a lot easier said than done. I'm looking into avenues like taking a bead class, joining a yoga group, and going to artsy functions hosted by the local arts group, but right now I'm a little strapped for cash for the next month or so. The bills are kinda cutting me close, so I can't lay down a lot for extra stuff. So, I've turned to the net!

It's hard to even find friends on the internet. I would like to find crafty types like myself that would like to get together, craft, go get coffee, catch a movie, go to crafty places, etc. I was feeling kinda down until I had a lightbulb pop in my head! Why not try to find local Etsy sellers?

Well, there are a lot of Etsy sellers in the area and I wrote them and I've already gotten back a couple of responses! I'm really hope this is a good sign of things to come. I'm going to go stir crazy if I don't make some friends outside of work pretty soon!

Well, off to bed. Oh, I wanted to share a little peek at my apartment complex (a more artsy shot than a straight-forward one). This is what the buildings in my complex look like.

My apartment complex

I will take more photos when I'm a bit more inspired. I went out today with my camera and I got very few shops...I just wasn't feeling it and the subject matter was pretty blah.

Photos I found over the weekend

me and gram

While cleaning out some files, I came upon some old pictures that I scanned in or just forgot about. The pic above is me at age 2 with my grandmother at her house. It was my first overnight trip ever. My grandmother told me that my parents were so sure that they were going to get a call in the night to come get me, but I ended up having no problems at all. I wasn't homesick! Oh, and back then I really looked cute in a hoodie. Not so much now.

tay and me

This is one of my favorite pictures. It's of my niece and I in Gatlinburg. You can see in the background a bluegrass band playing. I love her little foot as she was spinning. Taylor was the cutest little girl ever!

age-6

And the above photo graphic was from a project I started but never finished. I was going to take an experience from each year of my life and illustrate it. This was obviously for my 6th year. I was trying to convey vivid moments in my life that either changed me or had a major impact on who I am. The picture of my grandmother and I was supposed to be a part of it too. It was called "2 Grandmother's house I go". With the advent of inexpensive photo books, this could be an interesting project that I will need to look into revisiting.

Anyway, thought I would share these photos that I have a personal attachment too! I'm excited, cause I have tomorrow off for President's day! Yay!

Hope you have a great week Swellions!

Kittens inspired by Kittens

I was watching The Soup the other night and this was the "Clip of the Week". This is the most adorable/funny web video I've seen in a while. I'm pretty sure this little girl is being fed these silly lines, but I still love it. I have to admit, I have in the past fed lines to my nieces and nephews to try to get others to laugh at them. Like more adult phrases or song lyrics. My niece was too smart for this and always shook her head in defiance, cause she knew I was putting her on, but my nephew Grant was always up for the challenge and always got the biggest laugh. I'm that kinda Aunt...oh well.

Check out the video Swellions. Hope you love it as much as I do!

Valentine ideas from Design Sponge

design-sponge

I was perusing around Design Sponge a few moments ago and they have some super swell ideas that you need to check out for last minute Valentine ideas! I don't have a Valentine this year (other than my niece and nephews, as you saw the other day), but it doesn't mean I still don't love the season!! Aww man, I totally just realized that I intended on making Valentine cupcakes for work. I'm still a kid at heart (I was the one who always got excited about the school parties) and I like to have mini festive celebrations. It's too late now to go out and get the stuff to make it. Oh, well. :(

Anyway, back to my post. Check out these so cute ideas! I'm so inspired!!

valentinekit2

This Valentine kit is so adorable. I think it has something to do with the Hostess cupcakes. I love how iconic they are!

img_0216

I also love Kate's Uncommon Valentine. What a great way to use up all those trinkets. This would also look great using stickers!

3269290669_f5d7049553_o

This is also a great and easy idea to print out and pack in a lunchbox or to give as treats for friends and family...custom printed brown paper Valentine bags. They got this idea from Twig and Thistle's blog. I love the cutout brownie hearts and just the simplicity of the whole project. So sweet (literally).

Is there anything that you are doing special for the big day or any crafts you are making? I'd love to hear about them!

Until next time Swellions!

My first stop at a Fresno bead shop

new beads

Yeah, I meant for the title to rhyme.

Stopped by the bead store today and got a handful of cool new beads. This bead shop is in Clovis and is called Beads Etc. It is a cute little shop with lots of different kinds of beads. Lots of vintage and unique things for every beading personality. Personally, I'm a bold, funky, and retro gal. I thought the little monster beads were particularly funny. They reminded me of Russian stacking dolls. I really dig the big beads best! I met a nice lady named Aileen told me that they have several beading classes. As you probably know, I'm all about the simple project, but these bracelets and necklaces they had on display for their classes were really cool and it never hurts to learn a new technique. Also, since I'm new to the area, I would like to make some new friends and I'm hoping a creative course would be a great way to do so!

And very off subject, does anyone know about stumbleupon and how that brings you hits to your web site. I noticed a lot of hits to my trashy valentines was coming from it. I researched it a little and I get the concept of it, I just don't know how it exactly is linking to my blog.

I'm pretty tired tonight, so this is a quickie post.

Hope you have a great day tomorrow Swellions!

Sand Hearts & other Valentine photo ideas

valentine in the sand

I wanted to create something special for my nephews and niece for Valentine's Day now that I'm so far away. I really was struggling with an idea, but when I went to the beach, the idea popped into my head to write their names in the sand in a heart. I was going to make cards out of this, but decided to put them in frames for them to display in their room. I hope it reminds them that though I'm far away, I still love them very much and think about them.

Here's me drawing Taylor's Valentine in the sand:

sand heart

You could create a more elaborate frame, but I just put mine in a basic whitewashed (and cheap - only $2 each) frame from Big Lots. Big Lots has some really great frames!

I'm all about the quick craft. I like that it only really took me 15 minutes in all to draw, resize, print, and insert. It's more about the sentiment than anything else. I think that's the best kind of Valentine!

You can translate this idea into other photo image messages. Try photographing these ideas:

1) Write it in the snow
2) Spell it out with branches, nuts, or rocks (anything natural).
3) Arrange candies like red hots, conversation hearts, or M&M's
4) Photograph a ribbon heart and name (satin ribbon would make beautiful cursive type)
5) Make a name and heart with buttons, rhinestones, or poor out glitter on a plain surface
6) Spell out the name in rose petals
7) Put a prized pet in the picture and write out the pet lover's name in dog or cat food (or kitty litter if you decide to go there, but that may be an anti-valentine, huh?)
8) Spell it out in their favorite food (think the opening them of Napoleon Dynamite). Use Fruit Loops, Alphabet soup, ketchup etc. to share a special sentiment.

I guess if you didn't have enough of one object to spell out something, you could always just do an initial instead.

I hope you find this project inspiring!

Until next time Swellions!

The Family Tree

Tree on house

Like many people in Kentucky, my parents endured the past couple of weeks without power because of the ice storm. At the current time, there are still people without power and it's going on the third week! Being without power and everyday amenities can be stressful and very inconvenient. I've endured it before, but not the way they are suffering now. The thing is that having those modern inconveniences is a short-term headache, but the long-term effects are less like a headache and more like heartache.

Case in point: My parent's giant hickory tree is no longer with us. The ice got soooo heavy that all the branches leaned over swiping the house as you can see above. Luckily the house didn't face any major damage. At some point, the tree cracked in two. There was no choice but to excavate it.

The sad thing is that I don't know for sure if it is a hickory tree. I'll have to check with my mom for sure. I'm by no means a nature nut (pun kinda intended), but I know this tree produced nuts. It produced a lot of them that would fall to the ground and stab me in the foot if I ever went outside barefoot. I researched it a bit, and I think it to be a Mockernut Hickory. We had another hickory tree that produced much larger husks, but this one had small nuts with a small shell all around.

Well, back to my story. The tree had always been a go-to for get togethers. It was a refuge from the heat, because of the shade it produced. Here's a picture of us sitting outside under it at one gathering. My little nephew Brock (who was 3 at the time) was making giant bubbles!

brock & the giant bubble

This tree was also a backdrop for many, many photos. My dad loves taking photos where someone is eithing peeping behind a tree or standing in front of it. I think this was his favorite tree to pose his subjects on. Here's a pic of me (at age 10 or so, complete with a very bad haircut) and a photo of my sister Sophia posing behind the tree.

alexa&sophia

And here's a photo I took 11 years or so ago of my day with his 70's Chevy truck and the tree as a backdrop. I looked for a photo of just the tree the way it was and I did not have one. Kinda sad.

dad with truck

And like a lot of kids, around the age of 9 or so, I begged and begged for a swing. My dad hoisted himself up onto the seat of his tractor and tied rope around the limb for a very special swing for Sophia and I. He even made us a custom woodburned seat! My mom found it and sent me this pic.

swing seat1

I don't remember Sophia swinging on it all that much, but I sure did. I would swing out there (I remember I had to control it or I would slam right into the tree) for hours making up VERY random songs. I remember them being like, "Here I am...in the world...with a beautiful rose...and it is so lovely". Totally made up off the top of my head. The sad/not so sad thing is that I still do this, but usually in a situation with other people (maybe that's worse?).

And now the tree is no more. My mom said the tree service guys helped my dad cut it up and haul it away. Now all that is left are some wood chips where the trunk once was.

It really saddens me to know that it's not going to be there anymore. My mom said she's definitely going to miss the shade. The house will probably be warmer in the summertime as a result. Also, we won't have a central spot to hang as a family. I guess we will have to relocate to another spot, but I will miss our spot there under that tree. I guess you just don't know how much you love something until it's gone, huh?

Well, I guess I should look on the bright side for my dad's sake, though. It's one less tree he'll have to mow around!

Until next time Swellions!

Beachy Keen!

reflecting

If you listened to my little podcast yesterday, you would have heard that I went to Laguna Beach this weekend. I went to visit one of my best friends (Carey...she also took the photo above) who is staying down there for a few days with her Aunt. We went out and about in Laguna. It's the cutest and most quaint little town. Lots of galleries and unique little shops. Yeah, it's ritzy, but I didn't feel out of place or anything! Everyone there is incredibly casual and laid back.

We headed down to the actual beachfront and took some pictures. The weather was perfect. It was windy + sunny, so sometimes you felt like you needed your jacket and other times you didn't. Here's some fun pictures of our couple hours at the beach!

Tonight I decided to create swell valentine's utilizing trash (literally, not smutty images like you were probably thinking...ha ha) that I had on hand. I took the flyers and coupons I got in the mailbox and cardboard packaging that I would have normally thrown away and made one-of-a-kind Valentine's (along with some stuff from my existing craft stash) that I hope to give to someone special.

Here's a little rundown of how I made it happen...

First off, these were my basic materials! Nothing fancy at all...just trash!

Trash for valentines

I cut into the box the shapes I wanted my valentine's to be. Then I cut out words and images from the sales flyers (plenty of Valentine related words and products could be found in that trashy stash). I then used a foam brush to cover my cardboard and cut out images with Aleene's Instant Decoupage from Duncan.

Découpage it!

In the one shown above, I just collaged them into place (I found some fun images like stuffed animals, chocolates, and wine bottles). In the other rectangle valentine, I did a weave design of strips of cutout blocks of colors from the ads.

Decopauge weave

For the heart design, I decopauged it onto a newspaper article, then cut out a scallop edge all around. For the rectangle version, I layered it on other interesting trashy papers.

I finished it off by adding touches of Duncan's Soft paint around the edges and glamming it up with Glam it Up Crystals that I applied with the Tulip Cordless Heat Setting Tool. It was my first time using that tool and I was super excited with the results. It's really neat to add a little bling to projects using those crystals!

This idea doesn't have to be just for Valentine's. You can use your trash to make custom postcards, ACEO cards, tags, and much more. Even if it did come from the trash, most people will be really touched when you give them something you made custom just for them. I just don't recommend throwing the papers in the trash, then getting them out to use after coffee grounds and other grossness got on them. That wouldn't be a "Trashy" Valentine, that would be an "Icky" one.

Hope you enjoyed this project!!

Until next time Swellions!

my first recording!!!

Wednesday randomness

So a few things I have going on right now...

1) I am going to try to start posting mini posts to my blog from my iphone of interesting stuff I observe throughout the day. They will be short, mini blog posts, so when I do, please let me know what you think about them! I hope to incorporate them in with my daily blog posts, so that if I miss a day of blogging, I won't feel too stressed out...I will be able to let myself off the hook I've created for myself. Also, I'm sure you noticed my new header and twitter updates on the side of the blog. I plan on revamping some other sidebar items in the next couple of weeks, so look for that! My blogs in my sidebar and fave sites are in major need of an update, just haven't gotten around to it!

2) My good friend Carey is coming in to the LA area this upcoming weekend, so I think I'm going to try to meet up with her. I drove down that way last week for CHA, and it wasn't an awful drive, but it was long. I look super forward to seeing her and exploring Southern California. We may go to Disneyland, but I'm not sure just yet!

3) I have yet to get the craft supplies out. Yikes. I really need to get them organized, but I just haven't had the chance. I can't wait til they are out and about and I feel back in my natural crafting mode.

4) New Kids on the Block is appearing 5 minutes away from my house next month. It's my chance to go!!! I never went as a kid, but honestly I was joking. I'm not really feeling it like I used to. I'm not too excited to see middle-aged men trying to do hip hop moves.

5) Just downloaded an app called Lose it that lets you record your calorie count and exercise. If I you hadn't already guessed, I am trying to lose some weight. I just hate looking up in the mirror and seeing a double chin. This thing has gotta go! As soon as I've been getting home, I've been going to the gym to walk/run. I'm so not into exercise, but if I get on a routine, I'm pretty good at doing it. Wish me luck!

6)
Keep my family and friends back in Kentucky in your thoughs. My mom, dad, grandmother, and brother (and I'm sure some other folks I know back there) are still without power from the crazy Kentucky ice storm. From the sounds and looks of what I've seen online, it is really something else. Being without power for weeks on end is something most of us can't even imagine, but they're hanging in there and are dealing despite the tough times!

Cinnamon Moons

cinnamon moons

There are a few foods that are traditions in my family. My mom is known for her fabulous raisin raisin bread (best from the oven and smothered in butter). My sister Cynthia can make a mean batch of peanut butter cookies, which always comes delivered in a yellow/orange tupperware bowl. They're so popular you would think her name was..."Aunt Cyn Did you bring Peanut Butter cookies?" My sis Angela is also known for her cookies...she creates a tray full of 8 varieties at Christmas time that are one of my favorite things about the holidays at my parents' house. As for my sister Sophia, I'm really hoping the homeade cheesecake she made at Thanksgiving is something she brings to the next holiday gathering!

But the one thing that we all make and share a love for is this quick and simple recipe for Cinnamon Moons! I remember this being one of my first baking projects as a kid. I don't know where this recipe originated, but it is still a fave for my family. I swear that my nephews and niece could eat a panful all by themselves...they're that good. And the cool thing is that they are sooooooo easy. Even if you don't cook, you can totally make these and be proud of the results! I kinda think of them as the poor man's version of Monkey Bread. I don't know that monkey bread is that much harder to make, but it's a little bit more time consuming and a lot of people use a special bundt pan to make those. Anyway, here's how they're made!

Cinnamon Moons

Ingredients
– 2 cans of biscuits (I use the least expensive, basic brand)
– 1 cup granulated sugar
– 1/2 cup butter or margerine (I've always used Blue Bonnet brand)
– 1 tablespoon cinnamon (or more if desired)

Note: This recipe is for a 9x13 pan, but you can half this recipe using just one can of biscuits and bake them in a 8" round or 8"x8" square pan.

Instructions
1. Preheat oven to setting as specified on canned biscuit packaging.

2. Open up canned biscuits and cut each in half into moon shapes.

3. Melt butter in medium-sized bowl in microwave. Mix up your cinnamon/sugar mixture in another medium-sized bowl.
2009-02-03 20:12:43 -0800

4. Dip biscuit into butter, covering fully.
2009-02-03 20:14:15 -0800

5. Now dip into cinnamon/sugar mixture. As the picture shows, after dipping several times the cinnamon/sugar mixture gets kinda clumpy, but this is ok.
2009-02-03 20:14:52 -0800

6. Place in a greased pan (I just used regular cooking spray). Bake for 10-12 minutes until brown.
2009-02-03 21:28:58 -0800

You will need to ration the butter and sugar mixture as you go or you won't have any left as you near the end of your rolling, but you can always melt more butter and make more cinnamon/sugar mixture if needed. I'm also sure you could throw in your favorite nuts if you wanted a little extra crunch like monkey bread, but I haven't made them that way.

Hope you enjoyed this little family recipe. By the way, I took this pan into work last week and it was all gobbled down! Everyone kept raving about them! When I told them how easy they were to make, they couldn't believe it!

Until next time Swellions!!!

The Swell Life Kitchen

the swell life kitchen

Yep, getting settled in! And I've had a lot of people asking me, "What does your place look like?" or saying, "Send me some pics of your place!!", so I thought I would do it in installments. I would love to show you all at once, but I'm not that good at cleaning. A little tidbit about me that you may not have known...I am very good at propping and photo styling. So if you see a beautiful picture on my blog, chances are there is something sitting right next to it that I cropped or moved out of the way to get the shot. For me, it's all about making something look good, even if it's not great. Oh, well, my secret is out...Anyway, here's a little peek into my kitchen. I have had the cherry theme for 4 years and I was thinking I needed a change, but I have sooooo much stuff to decorate with and it's still super cute and fun, so I am keeping it for a while longer. I would say my style is cute and kitschy and colorful. It's unfortunate that I can't paint, but I don't think I would want to do that anyway...ugh, I had an unfortunate experience painting back a room on the day I was supposed to move out. I had to be out by 8 and I was there till 4 in the morning painstakingly painting my bedroom back eggshell! Yikes. Never again until I move into my own place I say!

If you hadn't already noticed, I have a hard time just sticking to the story (yes, I'm one of those that says they have to go on the phone, but ends up talking 30 minutes more).

So onto the good stuff!

And here's a look into my fridge décor. I love Elvis, but many of these were actually gifted to me. I don't make a point of collecting them or anything, but I still like them.

And here's some of my favorite kitchen things....

Colorful tin bowls. I love colored metal! I'm just not sure I would want to drink from the colored tin cups!

Clearing up California & Kentucky misconceptions

I just moved to California having lived in Kentucky all my life. I can't say I am now an official expert on California, but I wanted to let you in on some things you may or may not know about this state. I can't say this is going to be a long post, but there are a lot of things I am discovering living here and it is a nice change. I'd also like to address a few things Kentucky while I'm at it. I have been talking to a few coworkers about the differences and we've been having some great discussions. Anyway, here goes...

Things about California I've discovered

– California isn't just about "Your going to Hollywood, dude!" it's a lot more than showbiz related stuff. It's about agriculture! I live in the Central/San Joaquin Valley. This central part of the state as well as a lot of other parts is totally dedicated to raising the produce that is in our grocery stores. So, the next time you go into a market and pick up a head of lettuce or can of green beans, it's very likely it was grown and processed in California.

– The traffic isn't that bad here. I think a lot of people have the misconception that California driving is awful. I haven't noticed much of a difference. I even drove through L.A. last week. Yeah, there were more lanes, but it didn't feel any different than driving in Louisville. There are considerate drivers here too that let you in. While I'm sure there are some that cut you off, there are those back in Kentucky too.

– California is a huge melting pot. I notice a lot of times that I'm in the minority. It doesn't bother me, but I observe that there are a LOT more ethnic groups than in KY. In KY, there are mainly just whites, African Americans, and Hispanics, but here you have a wide range of people from different backgrounds. It's actually refreshing to live in a place with diverse cultures. I'm glad I'm getting the chance to have a broadened perspective.

– Not everyone in California is thin and healthy. I thought moving here I would feel out of place size-wise, but there are a lot of people in different sizes. You do see a lot of people who are healthy and take very good care of themselves and their image, but you also see a lot of people who don't. While in the grocery store, I observed a lot of people that looked like they were from my hometown. People are people, no matter where you go and they come in all shapes and sizes. In California, the weather is just better and you have much more opportunity to stay in shape (exercise outside) year round and eat fresher foods. I think that's the advantage that the California people have.

– This one has to do with both Kentucky and California. I often am discouraged by the stereotypes that come with Kentucky. In movies and television, they portray Kentuckians as redneck/hillbilly people who are uneducated and poor. Kentucky is a large state...some rural parts and some more urban. I find that living out here in California, I am just as much in tune with them on a lot of topics or even more than they are (it just depends on what it is). There are a LOT of very progressive people in Kentucky just like there are in California and vice versa (KY has high speed internet just like anywhere else!). In Kentucky and in any part of of our country, including the major cities, there are going to be uneducated and narrow minded people. So when people ask (and I haven't officially been asked this, btw), "Do you where shoes in KY?" that's a pretty big insult to us Kentuckians. I think anytime you move to a new place or go to a new place, it's important to help people better understand misconceptions about where you are from. I hope that the people who meet me will be able to learn from me and that I will be able to put out a positive vibe about Kentucky. I also hope I'm able to inform my Kentucky friends and family on the realities of California and what it is really all about as I learn more. I think that one way for us to stay educated is to share information and connect with each other. We really need to try to break away from the little bubbles we live in and get to know other regions.

For example, last week, I noticed while at a grocery store that vast amount of beans and ethnic foods available for purchase. In Kentucky, we don't have as great of a selection of foods. When I told my co-workers about this, they were quite amazed and I made a point to tell them what growing up in a rural area and shopping was like there. For example, as a child, living in a small KY town, I was not exposed to exotic fruits or vegetables or even organic foods. I think things are just simpler there and without the broad band of cultural influences to influence the food in that region, we just had basic things. They found that quite interesting.

Well, I could write a book about this, but I think I will draw to a close. I just wanted to share some of my observances and misconceptions that people might have. I hope you found it informative :)

Until next time Swellions!
