I heart Faces entry: "Pets" Photo Challenge

cat eye

This is my "Pets" iHeartfaces photo challenge entry for this week. It's a portrait of my cat Pixie! She is such a sweetie. I love her so much despite the fact that she scarfs down her food so fast that she pukes in random places in my house.

Go over to iHeartfaces and read how you can submit your animal photo into the contest!!

In other news, I'm a busy bee getting ready for my photography show at Twee this week. Good times.

Until next time Swellions!

Good Things

Villa Vagrant

I have some good news to share I'm pretty excited about!!

First of all, I am going to be having a photography show next week at Twee Boutique here in Fresno. I'll be exhibiting my various Fresno photography that I've taken recently (that's a photo I took above). Still getting ready for it! Got my mats in today...ordered 25 5x7 mats and 25 8x10 mats!

Secondly, I'm going to be in an upcoming Fresno magazine e-newsletter for my Fresno Buttons! Yippee! I'm excited. It's all because I wrote them a late night e-mail telling them about my buttons. It really does work to do random cold calls via the web!

Thirdly, thanks to a nice and informative comment by Scallywag, I now am going to attend the Mid Century Modern Home Tour in Sacramento this Saturday. I'm excited!!! I was also excited to learn that Fresno has it's own Mid-Century Modern Fresno Facebook page.

Anyway, that is what's new in my world. Hope you have a great end to your week!

Until next time Swellions!

Adorable Nautical Finds

I stopped by Michaels tonight and in their dollar section found the cutest nautical goodness. I particular love the $1 dollar canvases! I find that while I love all of these things, I rarely buy them these days. I just have too much stuff thanks to these $1 bins. Anyway, I can just enjoy such cuteness in photos and share them with you.

Nautical Canvases
These canvases were in 6 different styles.

Coozies These drink coozies made me smile. So perfect for the 4th!

Notepads Fun matching pen and notebook sets.

Nautical Duckies
And you just can't go wrong with a rubber ducky...esp. one in an unusual green, navy, or red. I love the twist on tradition!

Until next time Swellions!

Thoughts on staying original in the crafty/creative marketplace

ORIGINAL

I often think about how hard it is to be original today with everything that is available to us online and in stores. It is very, very hard to have an original idea that no one has thought of yet. With this in mind, I thought I'd give some of my crafty thoughts on what it takes to be an original in the creative world. I have to step back and take a big picture l.ook at what I'm making a lot of times and evaluate why I'm doing it and the intention I've had run-ins over "original" ideas, and it's not pretty, so I want to help you avoid the pitfalls too.

Stay true to who you are. Don't make things just because they are trendy or "hot". If this is what you are basing your creations on, you are going to be in the same boat as hundreds of others who are doing the same thing! If you particulary like something that happens to be trendy, think outside of the box as to how you can incorporate in a fun or original way or maybe just skew it slightly so it is different from what everyone else is doing. That extra push of a creative idea will make a big difference!

If someone copies you, don't stew over it. I've had it happen to me before, someone has stolen my idea or phrase I've come up with for a t-shirt. As crappy as this is, it happens! I doubt that many people are actually going to go to the effort or time and money to trademark a projects they do on the fly. The thing is, once you post that project for all to see, it is out there for all to be seen and eventually even stolen! You can choose to let this get you down for the rest of your life, or you can hold your head high and say, "That was my idea first", then move on. And also, sometimes it does end up that you both had the same exact idea at the same time or had done the same idea several years earlier (and you didn't know)...seriously, it does happen! If you are always upset about what idea someone stole from you, then this is keeping you from coming up with that next big idea! Those who are constantly improving their craft and looking forward rather than to the past are those that are going to succeed.

Don't steal an idea, alter it to make it your own! This is kinda related to the last thought. In this digital age, there are so many ideas out there. The craft marketplace and idea marketplace is exceedingly oversaturated. So to have a totally original idea is incredibly hard to do. What I suggest is that if you see an idea you are drawn to and want to make, think about how you can do your own twist or spin on it to make it your own. Let's say someone has painted a chair in a wild array of patchwork colors and you love it and want to make one your own. Think about how you can maybe do a similar look using monochromatic colors, different textures or shapes, or a different technique. Don't just blatantly copy and pass the idea off as your own. This does come off very unoriginal. And if you do create something very similar to a style someone else did, be sure to say you were "inspired by so and so" and give credit where it is due. Passing an idea off as your own is really lame.

Create a style/look all your own. If you are blogging or featuring your project on a site, how can you make your project look totally different or interesting. Look through magazines or web sites for styling ideas. You will notice that the product they are selling isn't all that interesting, but the way they photographed it and laid it out on the page is! Find a way to present your look that stands out from the crowd, whether this be amazing up close step by step photos.

What are your thoughts on originality and do you really think there is an original idea out there these days that others haven't jumped on the bandwagon and created already?

Until next time Swellions!

Dahlia Design

dahlia

On Saturday I went to the Farmer's Market and picked up some dahlias for $5 bucks from one of the vendors. I took a photo for you to see above :) It was the first time I've ever purchased dahlias. I don't think this vendor has had them before. Anyway, I really love them and it's partially because I've seen the dahlia motif used a lot in design as of late. They really are beautiful...they remind me very much of the Zinnias my Grandma used to grow.

So I thought I'd pull together a few examples of some pretty dahlias used in design and craft that you might like too :)

These rugs from Norman Copenhagan are so gosh darn cool. What a neat statement piece!

Found this table setting on Country Living. What a pretty summer table setting or wedding table setting idea!

sunshine-ring

I've been seeing a lot of these resin dahlias online. I particularly like this ring by Etsy seller Tamar for the ornate ring setting. Very pretty.

This lamp is a fun and modern way to incorpate this flower into a retro classic design!

Have you seen any cool dahlia inspirations out there on the net or in stores recently?

Cutest candy store ever!!

This past weekend, while up in Sonora, CA, I went with William to the cutest candy store called The Candy Vault!! It reminded me of the candy store in Willy Wonka. It was filled to the brim with sugar goodness. I loved the way they displayed their candy and the neat little niches they created to make it a whimsical place. Here's some fun pics!

The Candy Vault Lollipops
Fun lollipops welcomed you inside the store!

The Candy Vault in Sonora
Here's the outside. They had great branding that was throughout the entire store. Love that! By the way, I found an overview photo here, if you want to see what the store looks like as a whole. I forgot to take one!

Beans & Bokeh
Rows and rows of jelly beans, M&M's and more.

Candypalooza
Another candy view.

Candy Wall
Here's the display from back. So colorful.

Tiddly Winks
There were lots of vintage games on the walls for décor. I particularly connected with this tiddly winks box (I had a tiddly winks game as a kid, not as cool as this one though).

Candy Galore
There were big bins filled to the brim with various candies!

Candy Mail Boxes
I loved how creatively the candy was displayed in these vintage mail boxes!

Door to Willy Wonka room
One of the cutest rooms was a Willy Wonka room that used to be a bank vault.

William in Willy Wonka room
Here's William inside the Willy Wonka room. It had a GREAT mural on the wall. They played Willy Wonka non-stop (this has to be fun for customers, but annoying to employees). They also had pictures of the Willy Wonka characters all grown up!

I give this place 2 swell thumbs up!
I give this place two BIG thumbs up.

If you are ever in the Sonora, CA area do stop by. They also have ice cream, vintage sodas, homemade chocolates (and did I mention chocolate covered potato chips)?

3 recent creations

Wanted to share a few of my recent creations. Good times!!

I made this for my Curbly post last week, but I didn't end up using it. I thought it was a bit too simple looking. I still like it...what do you think? Would it be something you would be interested in learning how to do?

homeade whipped cream
I made homeade whipped cream to go on top of angel food cake and strawberries. It was so yummy. I've never made the real kind before! I'm sure it's fattening, but I'm ignoring that.

Number and Lines ATC
And here's an ATC I did on the fly that I gave to my new Fresno friend Kristy. I met her at Twee a couple weeks ago and she was making ATC's, so I stopped to make one too. I gave her this one and she sent me one in the mail that she made. It was nice to get snail mail! I never get actual letters anymore!

Hope you have a great Tuesday!

I'm finishing up my week as a guest blogger at Curbly! My last post is on all things Trompe l'oeil! I just love this style so much!

By the way, the image above is of an Eames Lounge and Saarinen Tulip Chair attached to everyday office chairs. Cool huh? It is by designer Chenhui Su! I found it via Apartment Therapy.

Hipstamatic Lightbox

Finished Lightbox

I'm guest blogging all this week at Curbly! Hop on over there and see my latest feature...a Hipstamatic Lightbox! I planned on doing a DIY for father's day called "Pop Art" featuring a photo of my daddy, but it was way to involved for me to explain how to do it. I did complete it, I just didn't have it in me to explain step by step how to do it. Writing step by steps for Photoshop is really hard and you have to be really thorough.

It's a Ring Thing!!

I was researching rings today and I came upon a few that were very cool and very inspiring!! Makes me want to make and wear some cool rings. I don't know how practical most of these are, but a lot of statement rings are just that, they make a statement to catch your eye...they are more about design than functionality or comfort. Hey, kinda reminds me of heels! Which one is your favorite below?

Creative Explorations in Photoshop

I love making digital collages and art in Photoshop. I feel it is one exercise in creating in graphic design where I'm not as controlled. My overall design sense is pretty controlled layout and type-wise. When I take a photo, I am also very controlled in how I take it. I usually play by the rule of thirds rule. It is very hard to break away from thinking so structured when your mind just goes there.

That's why I love making these little "explorations" as I call it. It takes me anywhere from 5 minutes to 30, but basically, I layer several images on top of each other in Photoshop, then choose different layer styles (whichever one looks best to my eye) as well as airbrush and erase areas as needed.

Here's one where I merged these two photos from my Flickr stream...Shoes and More and Me N Ed's and Sparkles in the Grass.

photoshop-exploration-one

As you can see, I added in additional orange and red coloration, but a lot of it was just the layers saturating over top of each other. I think it turned out to be cool graphic art. I would totally make frame this. It makes a bold statement.

Here's another one I did where I merged Silvia and Joshua take on the Fun House, aluminum christmas tree color wheel light, and SSSSSSSSSSSSSS. I think it turned out pretty cool too.

creative photoshop exploration 2

As you prob. can tell, I gravitate towards the brights and saturated colors. I can't help it, I just do.

Here's one I did last year that was a little more subtle and probably a little more thought provoking.

the ties that bind

I find that creating these little works is a very satisfying process. I always complete a finished project that I'm happy with. I can't always say that about some of the crafts or graphic design projects I've worked on.

Off to bed!
