Creativity Quote Canvases

Creativity Quotes

The other day I was at Joann and I came upon super cute tiny canvases on tiny wooden easels. They were so adorable and I had to pick a few up!

I wanted to create some fun little quote canvases that were a little distressed and easy to do!

All I did was use Tulip® Soft paints to cover the canvas, then I used my various colored markers and marked, then rubbed them around the edges. Here's a little pic to show you...

Distressing edges

I then wrote the phrase...

Then went around and fattened it up. I'm happy with how they turned out!

Sketchy Sunday

stack of sketches

Today I got sketchy with it. I took out my basket of markers some random paints, and drew up a storm. I just played. I didn't base my sketches and doodles on anything, just enjoyed coloring and playing and the process of it all...here's 4 of my finished sketches.

And here's a couple more detail shots! As you can see, I'm messy. Sometimes the tiny details aren't pretty. It's no biggie, I just feel sketching and doodling loosens up my creative muscles!

I had some random fun making this chart last night. It's a little thing in life that I know people have a preference for, but don't really talk about. What order do you eat them in? I'd like to know?

the color of my world

the color of my world

Took some photos tonight and this is the one that just stuck. I am not a huge fan of selective coloring, but in this case, it really works. My rainbow eye is my Yellow Owl Workshop pendant off the chain. i love it.

I see the world through colors...the bolder the better. Let's just say, ROY G. BIV and I are attached at the hip.

Here's some more rainbow eye candy photography of mine for you to enjoy this Friday!

How to make pretty doodled leaves + video tutorial

The gift of doodle

I've been doodling a lot lately. Maybe it's a getting back to basics thing. Not sure, but I've been having a lot of fun! Something about doodling and not thinking about it is nice. It doesn't have to be perfect, just fun and I just have been going with the flow.

1234 leaves in a row

Doodle leaves

I was inspired to make these leaves after seeing a journal belonging to my co-worker. I used a cut out leaf stencil (I cut myself) to keep me into a loose leaf shape. Seriously, I tried drawing them without the stencil and they weren't pretty. I needed the stencil to give me an edge to stop at.

When I first started coloring them in, I just randomly used marker colors from my bin, I didn't think and I actually ended up using a color combo I wouldn't normally gravitate too. It's nice to mix it up.

Here's a little video I made showing you how to make these. I actually cut off the stems for these leaves, but you can leave them on if you want.

For the top of the box, I added a flower from this doodled flower tutorial I did last week. They'd make a great accent to a gift, scrapbook page, or accessory, don't you think?

Make a Cool Pop Art Rainbow Portrait

rainbow portrait

I love color and black and white mixed together. Here's a super quick project to make a cool photo where the two collide. And you can do it less than 5 minutes flat!! Here's how:

1. Start of turning your color photo into black and white. You will need to make it "grayscale". I played with the levels in Photoshop and made it high contrast black and white so that it almost looked pop art in nature.

Screen shot 2011-02-22 at 10.00.09 PM

2. Turn the photo back into RGB mode so you can start working in color. Make a selection and fill it in with a color (I guesstimated the width, but you can take a more mathmetic approach so you get exactly the right number of bars across). I personally wanted to use colors in order, but you can play around with your colors and palettes.

Screen shot 2011-02-22 at 10.00.44 PM

3. Duplicate that selection, then on each layer, use the magic wand and change the color of each of the bars until you have gone across the whole photo.

Screen shot 2011-02-22 at 10.02.35 PM

4. Now in each of the layers, choose multiply from the layer styles palette. Voila! You have your finished portrait to save, upload, or print!

Screen shot 2011-02-22 at 10.04.57 PM

You may want to just use this on certain parts of your black and white photo to accent a particular feature or element.

Hope you enjoyed this photo tutorial!

A visit to the Home Depot

A day at the depot

A lot of crafty folks really get excited about hardware stores. I am not one of them. I think it was going to a fair share of them as a kid. I just don't get into it if I don't have a project in mind. So, when my boyfriend said we were going to Home Depot, I thought it would be just another boring trip.

As I was making my way into the store. I discovered a row of cool shopping carts that was totally photo worthy...well, I was on the mission for photos (using my instagram app) at that point and it made my visit to the Home Depot much more enjoyable!

Trying to fill my blank canvas

Photo on 2011-02-17 at 20.43 #2

I've been struggling at blogging this past week. I guess I would call it something like losing my mojo. Every idea I had, I didn't want to execute and all my ideas just seemed kinda stale or kinda lame. Nothing excited me.

I guess I see a blog kinda like a blank canvas, you have to come up with content that you feel is worthy of reading. Personally, as a blogger, I feel like I have to come up with content that ilicits comments or page views. I don't know that this is a healthy means for blogging, but this is what I do. I put a lot of pressure on myself to come up with good and original content. Most of the times it is something I find satisfying to write about, but sometimes it's not.

So, I feel like I'm at a point where I need to push past this fear of the blank canvas and move forward. And how am I going to move forward? Part of it requires me thinking outside of myself and taking on another perspective. I hope this helps me, and I can help you too when you feel in a rut, cause I know we all go through these moments as creative people.

Anyway, here are my thoughts...

Set a Challenge
One of the things I think I do well at is being faced with a fun challenge. For example, there's a group called Iron Craft that do weekly craft challenges. The other night, I was about to participate in their "Gold" challenge, but I fell asleep before I could get to the project (that's another story). The thing is this: I would never approach a topic like Gold if I wasn't challenged to do so. It's not something I would gravitate toward, but the minute that the option of a challenge presented itself, my head was spinning with ideas all relating to Gold. So I guess I was going for the gold, huh? Sorry, bad pun. By exercising my brain in challenge form, I think outside the box of what I normally do and flex those muscles. Even though, I didn't do the challenge, I think it would be cool, if I maybe kept a challenge jar of ideas for me to pull out when I'm in a rut on a variety of topics. It could help spark an idea!

Do SOMETHING rather than NOTHING
Ya know? I do this all the time! I think, "Oh, my readers won't like this" or "That's not original enough!" Sometimes it doesn't have to be the most original idea, but at least you are doing SOMETHING rather than NOTHING. I had this very thought tonight when I took pictures of my cat. I thought, "Hey, I can post these!", but then I decided not to. I don't think I go crazy with the cat stuff on my blog and I'm not even sure you'd mind. It was me overthinking rather than just posting or acting on the idea. It's better to just get that idea out and onto the page than to worry about not coming up with the "most grandest idea ever!" Sometimes the little things work cause they are short, sweet, and simple and what others can connect to!

There's always more canvas to fill
So if you don't make your mark and that canvas goes empty, then that's just kinda sad. True story, the canvas I'm holding above is one I bought 3+ years ago and I have yet to paint/draw/glue anything on it. Fear is holding me back cause I'm afraid I won't create something amazing. Sometimes you just have to realize that yes, you will have less than stellar stuff to say. More than likely, though, you will create something that will lead to something that is really stellar! It takes several tries to get to that masterpiece. So fill that canvas and the next and the next! It will be much more satisfying! It just sometimes takes that initial leap!

OK, that's about all the personal self help I can give myself tonight. I'm exhausted. Heehee.

Let me know what you think and if you deal with this problem too! I may just have to come back to this post from time to time to learn from my own advice!

Oh, and I have a real canvas to go fill! Expect that in the next blog post! I promise!

How to Find a Four Leaf Clover

I bet you didn't know I am an expert 4 leaf clover hunter, did you?
Since the age of 13, I've loved hunting for four leaf clovers! I even skipped out of having to walk around the track in 9th grade cause my gym teacher let me hunt for four leaf clovers instead! I find it incredibly relaxing and fun and I especially like the payoff of being able to give someone a gift of a four (sometimes five) leaf clover.

Finding a four leaf clover isn't as hard as you might think...here's my tips for finding these rare gems!

The Perfect Spot
Look for a patch of grass with a bed of clovers to begin. I like to start in a big patch and work my way around. If I look for while in one spot with no results, I often will move to a new spot in the patch. Supposedly there is 1 four leaf clover for every 10,000 three leaf clover, but oftentimes, when I find one four leaf clover, I find two or three more right around it (which makes me think they are little genetic freaks of nature).

Be patient
While I think I'm pretty good at finding them, I have searched in a patch for more than an hour without finding one! For the most part, though, I can find a four leaf clover after several minutes. Don't get frustrated. It just takes a little bit of time. Part of that time is just trying to get your eye to differentiate between a three leaf clover and a four leaf clover. Hang in there.

Be a keen observer
Get down in the patch and explore. Yes, you will look like a weirdo to someone passing by and more than likely, someone will come up to you and ask what you've lost. The closer you get to actually SEE and open your eyes to a four leaf clover, the more likely you are to find one. Rake through the patch with your hands, observing little sections at a time...I promise the payoff will be grand. Also, don't let your eyes fool you! People often see two clovers together and are fooled into thinking it's a four leaf clover!

Be open to even cooler discoveries!
On many occasions, I've found five leaf clovers as well! Once, I even found a 12 leaf clover! In one patch alone, I found over 30 four leaf, 5 leaf, and 7 leaf clovers. I'm lucky...after my hunt I didn't turn into the Toxic Avenger. It was so bizarre that whole patch was mutant clovers!

Preserve your finds
Keep some clear tape available and press your found four leaf clover between the strips. Cut around it if desired. Seriously, this is one of the best gifts you can give to people! They are always amazed you took the time to find a clover for them! Oh, and FYI, not all four leaf clovers are as picture perfect as ones you might have seen in your dreams. A lot are a little gnarly, bug bitten, or irregular in leaf shapes. I have found quite a few perfect ones, though, so they are out there to be found!

Happy Hunting!
Admittedly, I don't get outside enough just to enjoy nature. Stopping to search the clovers is a nice way to get outside and just let my mind wander. It's great to get away from the computer every now and then and breathe fresh air!

Let me know if you take any of my four leaf clover-finding advice! I'd love to see what you find!

Until next time Swellions!

Valentine Ribbon & Felt Brooches

Valentine Brooches

This is a repost from last year! Enjoy!

So tonight I wanted to do a quick and easy craft for Valentine's! Valentine's is my 3rd favorite holiday after Halloween & Christmas. While I usually don't have a Valentine on the big day, I still love the holiday. I think people get too caught up in the drama of it sometimes that they forget to think about love as being universal, not just between a person and their significant other. I like to think of Valentine's more as the way I did in 1st grade, when you made a crafty Valentine box from a shoebox (decorating w/ doilies & glitter, of course) and stuffing it with little notes and from friends. So, with this in mind, I suggest you whip up a few of these, not just for you, but also as a way to say "I love you" to your pals! They're fast and fun and you can do something a little different with each one!

Valentine Ribbon & Felt Brooches

Supplies
– thick felt sheets
– wood disks
– markers
– various ribbons
– various rhinestones
– pearl accents (I purchased mine...the heart and dots from Michaels)
Fast Grab Tacky Glue
Scribbles paint
Glossy Collage Pauge
– Scissors
– pin backs

Instructions
If you notice, my pins are very "rough" around the edges. I wanted them to be organic...that's how I craft. Basically, I just sat down with the felt and the ribbons and played. I folded the ribbons, cut them into pieces and layed them down onto circles I cut out of felt. I arranged the ribbons and accents until I was happy with their arrangement.

For the wood disks, I used my markers and colored them in as desired. I covered it in Glossy Collage Pauge to seal when I was finished. For the one with the leopard, you also notice that I collaged on some magazine pages. I love magazines for small little projects like this, cause you can cut out colors and patterns from ads and whatnot. I found the leopard print on a jacket on an ad actually.

I glued all the elements together using Fast Grab Tacky Glue. It's great cause it bonds really quickly. You just need to hold it together several seconds to get it to bond into place.

I also added some Scribbles dimensional paint on the pink and black one as well, but there really are limitless materials and embellishments you can add! Glue or sew on beads, buttons, dimensional stickers or add your own embroidery touches! Have fun with them and go to town.

I finished them off by adding felt to the backs of all of them and adding the brooches with the Fast Grab. Let dry, then wear and enjoy!

Here's a photo of some of the steps in my process of making these...

Here's a closeup of each one of them!

This would make for a fun craft if you are holding a crafty Valentine's party or a Valentine's party for little girls! You could also adapt this idea to go on a headband or hairclip as well!

Hope you enjoyed this project!
